How to Care for your Fairy Garden

fAIRY 1Fairy gardening is an awesome way for kids to learn about plants, and a great way for adults to connect with their inner child. We have gathered a few tips and tricks that can help you keep your fairy garden looking great all the time

First you should decide what type of light and what conditions are right for your fairy garden.  You should talk to your garden center representative when choosing your plants to ensure what your light should be and what conditions the plants prefer.

Indoor Fairy Gardens

If you have an indoor fairy garden it may or may not have drainage, so check the bottom of your pot and see if you have a drainage hole.

No Drainage Fairy Gardens:

When you want to water your fairy garden you should check the moisture of the soil beforehand. If there is moss covering the soil, peel some back and stick your finger in a couple inches. If you find the soil is damp and soggy, you should hold back on the watering of your garden, as it will become water logged. If you find that the top couple centimeters of soil are dry then you can add some water. When you water for the first time, add a small amount of water and let it settle for 20 minutes, check the garden again, if you find it is still not damp, add some more. Keep doing this until you feel that the soil is damp but not saturated.

Drainage Fairy Gardens:

Check the moisture level of the soil by sticking your finger in the soil a couple inches. If the soil is dry in the top couple centimeters then soak the soil of your garden thoroughly and allow it to drain. Check regularly for the moisture level, but allow to dry out a bit between watering.

Outdoor Fairy Gardens

If you have an outdoor fairy garden in a pot, it is highly recommended to have drainage because with rain, the fairy garden can fill up with water and drown your plants. The moisture level of an outdoor fairy garden should be checked at least once every 2 days in the summer heat. When you find the garden is slightly dry in the top couple centimeters, saturate fully and allow to drain.

Fertilizing Fairy Gardens

Because fairy gardens have a mixture of plants, an all purpose fertilizer is recommended. You should read and follow the label. If you have an outdoor fairy garden, follow the outdoor plant recommendations and if you have an indoor fairy garden, follow the instructions for houseplants.

How to care for your Anthurium

Pink

Pink

Anthuriums are beautiful blooming plants, and with a little special care you can keep yours blooming all year long.

Anthuriums need plenty of light, but no direct sunlight. So to keep your plant happy in your home you place it in a bright room with lots of light but in a place that does not recieve direct sunlight. A kitchen dining table is usually a good place to find these conditions! You can keep your anthurium as a beautiful patio/yard plant once night time temperatures stay above 14 degrees C. These exotic plants love light and Southern Ontario’s humidity and will thrive if you place them in a bright place, with no direct sunlight. Under a veranda  or a good shade tree would be the best place for your beautiful anthurium!

Anthuriums love humidity, but do not like to have their roots saturated. So you can keep your anthurium in a glass container with no drainage. About once a week you will lightly wet the roots at the surface,  pouring so much water that it runs through and fills up the glass to just underneath the roots.   This way as it warms up the water will evaporate and moisten the roots above. Just remember, your anthurium loves that humidity and it is important not to let it dry out!

Anthuriums bloom all year long, unlike most tropical plants. Because of this, we recommend you fertilize your anthurium throughout the year. You can use a liquid fertilizer (8-7-6) and fertilize every once every two weeks in the growing season (March – October) and once every two months from October until March.

Happy Gardening!

How to care for your Stephanotis

Stephanotis

To keep your Stephanotis happy and to get your blooms to return this summer there are a few simple, easy steps to follow. After your blooms have passed and it warms up outside you can place your Stephanotis outside. Keep your plant in a well lit area,  away from the direct sunlight as this may scald the leaves. In the summer the ideal temperature for Stephanotis is 21ºC.  These  are high humidity loving plants. If you would like to keep your Stephanotis outside during the summer you should place it in a humidity tray. To make a humidity tray find a pot without drainage that is large enough to fit your potted Stephanotis inside with about 2 inches of gravel in the bottom. Place the gravel in the bottom of the no drainage pot and pour water onto the gravel until it is about 1/2 an inch below the surface of the gravel. Then place your Stephanotis in the pot. As the day warms the water will evaporate from the gravel and provide your plant with humidity.(Hint:This humidity tray is something that most plants would love to have if you want to place them outside in the summer). During the summer months you will want to fertilize every 2 weeks with a fertilizer high in potassium (The 3rd number in the fertilizer code). You will want to water regularly throughout the growing season.

During the winter month Stephanotis do not grow much so you will want to water sparingly. Do not allow the soil to completely dry out, but make sure the top inch of the soil is dry before watering. Temperatures between 13-15ºC are ideal for, although they can tolerate temperatures as low as 10ºC.

To repot your Stephanotis you will want to wait until the end of the plants dormancy period, which is in late March-April. You will want to chose a potting soil rich in compost and organic matter. A suitable mix is African Violet soil which is designed for plants that require rich compost and lots of organic matter.
