Tropical Plants

Westland carries a huge selection of tropical plants!  We are known for our ‘unusual finds’ of tropical houseplants, cacti and succulents.

Alocasia x amazonica

Alocasia Polly

The Alocasia requires a moist shaded area to thrive.  Plant in organic rich soil.  Remove spent leaves and fertilize twice a year.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera

Full sun.  Aloes require a cactus mix soil that drains well.  Water sparingly in the winter.  In the spring or summer water well only when the soil dries out.

Anthurium

Flamingo Flower

Easy care plant that produces beautiful long lasting flowers throughout the year with almost no effort on your part!  Glossy heart-shaped flowers are modified leaves called ‘spathes’.  A beautiful table centre piece.

Part sun to shade in summer.  Fertilize as needed for bloom production.  Allow to dry out between watering.

Aphelandra squarrosa

Zebra Plant

Requires bright in direct light.  Soil needs to stay moist- not wet and not dry.  Fertilize with balanced houseplant fertilizer every two weeks in the spring and summer.  Re-pot in the spring each year.  These plants require a high humidity.

Araucaria heterophylla

Norfolk Island Pine

Prefers full sun.  Drought tolerant.  Let the soil dry out between watering.  Fertilize weekly during spring and summer. Re-pot in the spring.

Asparagus densiflorus ‘Sprengeri’

Asparagus Fern

Bright indirect light.  Moderate water needs in the summer-winter water needs decrease.  Fertilize once a month during spring and summer growing season.

Begonia rex cultorum

Rex Begonia

Place in a full to part shade location.  Medium water needs.  Allow soil to dry out between watering.  Fertilize in spring and summer.

Cactus

Cactus

Westland carries hundreds of varieties of cactus!  Large plants for a dramatic statement or small starts- you will find a cactus for your space.  Cactus requires direct- bright light.  Water and fertilize in the spring and summer.  Let cactus dry out in the winter for a dormancy stage.  If you have a humid home the cactus will not need watering between November and March.  If your home is dry- you will want to water every 6 weeks.

Calla Lily

Calla Lily

Calla lilies thrive in full sun locations.  Water with warm water when dry.  Do not over water.  Fertilize every three weeks.  When the leaves begin to turn yellow and wither, the plant is entering dormancy. Gradually reduce the amount of water you’re providing to help speed up the process. When the foliage is completely yellow, cut it back to the surface of the soil and move the pot into a cool, dark location. In January, dig the rhizome out of the pot and put it in a new pot filled with fresh soil. Your rhizome should be in the middle of the pot, covered with an ample amount of soil. Place the pot back in its sunny location, and your calla lily should bloom beautifully!

Chlorophytum

Spider Plant- Airplane Plant

Spider plants require defused light- brighter light in the winter months.  Require watering when dry- allow water to filter through soil and out of plant.  Fertilize twice a month in the spring and summer.
